How to get around Mauritius?
Mauritius has 2 main highways and they are free!
The first crosses the island diagonally from the airport to the center of the island, the capital and the north of the island: Grand Baie, passing through the Pamplemousse gardens.
The second follows the wide bypass of Port-Louis from Ebène to Terre Rouge, just southwest of Pamplemousse, crossing magnificent landscapes and skirting Mount Peter Both.

Means of transport:
For local navigation, transportation options in Mauritius are varied: transfer agents, car rentals, taxis, local buses, and the metro are all viable choices.

CAR RENTAL

If you want to explore Mauritius at your own pace , car rental is the best option. It allows you the most freedom and flexibility. Car rental in Mauritius is easy and inexpensive. Cars can be picked up and returned at the airport or delivered to hotels. We offer several vehicle categories to choose from.
A valid driver's license is required, but be careful, driving is on the left!
BY BUS
Immerse yourself in Mauritian life by exploring the island by bus. Bus lines run throughout the island, with numerous stops, making them very convenient. There are two types of buses in Mauritius: standard buses and express buses. If possible, use the express buses as they are much faster and have air conditioning. However, the express bus service is not very frequent.
Note : For safety reasons, please check bus schedules with your host or hotel reception before leaving and ask for proof of payment, as this will be valuable if an inspection occurs.
The positive point of buses: cheap
The negative point of buses: maybe tiring on long journeys
BY TAXI

Taxis are a great option between public transportation. Taxi prices vary, depending on the quality of the car and the duration/distance of the trip. Taxis are easily accessible on site, either from your hotel or from the airport.
The positive point of taxis: You won't get lost, and if you get to know the driver, you might even get a chance to gain valuable information about the place you're visiting.
The downside of taxis: As everywhere else, some may charge you the "tourist" price, hence the advantage of planning it in advance (vehicle transfers).
THE METRO (TRAM)

Mauritius's first metro is a light rail public transport system linking the town of Curepipe to the capital, Port Louis (as seen below), and a new line from Rose Hill to Réduit via Ébène. The project's objective was to significantly reduce traffic congestion, particularly around the capital. Current operating hours are from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Travel requires a ticket or a MECard (a prepaid, rechargeable smart card). All tickets and MECards can be purchased from electronic ticket machines at any of the 23 stations.
The good thing about the metro: no traffic jams during rush hour.
The downside of the metro: it is not accessible throughout the island, especially on the coasts.

BY BIKE / BY SCOOTER
Electric bikes and scooters are eco-friendly and very practical means of transportation for short trips. The more tourists there are in the area, the more rental points you'll find; everything is clearly marked on site. Many hotels on the island offer bike rentals or can direct you to local businesses for a reasonable fee.
The positive point: Ecological and inexpensive
The downside: The island does not have a dedicated road and we do not recommend it for long distances.
