Below you will find the formalities specific to civil marriages .
DOCUMENTS TO BE PROVIDED ( in 2 copies) :
- copies of the birth certificates of the future bride and groom (original version).
- copies of the first 6 pages of your respective passports.
- divorce or widowhood certificate (if applicable)
- family record book (if you have children)
- proof of address (issued by the town hall and stating your residential address).
- the Marriage Capacity form (attached), issued by the French Embassy in Mauritius.
Note: Please allow 6-11 weeks from the date of receipt of documents to the on-site wedding.
ON-SITE PROCEDURES :
Before D-Day
Go to the Civil Registry Office to submit and verify the original documents.
Go to a lawyer to obtain the official certificate validating the registration of all documents.
Go to the Supreme Court where you will swear the Affidavit, testifying to the accuracy of the elements entered in the certificate submitted by the Attorney.
Go to the Civil Registry Office of the locality of the place chosen for your wedding to formalize the ceremony and proceed with the publication of the banns.
Note: You must be on Mauritian soil at least 2 to 3 days before the civil wedding.
D-Day
A civil marriage can be celebrated the day after the banns are published, and the local civil registrar will officiate the event. Two witnesses are required.
Note: Civil marriages can be celebrated every day subject to the availability of the officer .
After D-Day
The marriage certificate will be validated by the Prime Minister's office and will be sent to you upon your return.
If you wish to obtain the transcription of the marriage certificate in the French civil status registers so that the union is enforceable under French law, you can submit the request by completing the form (attached)
